Nepenthe Wines

Nepenthe WinesNepenthe was described by Homer in The Odyssey as an Egyptian herbal drink so powerful that it eased grief and banished sorrow from the mind.

Nepenthe Wines began in 1994 with an idea. James Tweddell, (now Managing Director of the Nepenthe group), was touring the USA in the Napa Valley wine region. While visiting a restaurant called Nepenthe he phoned his parents with the idea of starting a wine company in Australia. After the initial shock, the decision was taken and Nepenthe Wines came into being.

Nepenthe is a family company with a sense of pride and commitment that is also felt by the employees of the company.

The Nepenthe group consists of a number of integrated companies. It incorporates a vineyard management and an irrigation company. This allows for great quality control all the way through the wine making process.

Nepenthe vineyards were first planted in the Adelaide Hills area. This was a deliberate choice, as it allowed for an enormous range of flavors and varietal compositions through the different climatic conditions. James Tweddell believes that the Adelaide Hills in the best place in Australia to grow Sauvignon Blanc.

The Nepenthe Group is committed to producing consistently high quality wines. Great care is taken to ensure only the best of each vintage reaches the glass.
