Cape
d’Estaing is one of the better-known labels on Kangaroo Island. International
wine critic, Robert Parker, said the 2001 Shiraz was probably the best wine ever
produced on the island.
In 1993, four couples purchased a 200-hectare farm with the aim of establishing
a vineyard capable of producing high quality grapes.
Their range includes, the highly praised Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz/
Cabernet blend.
The 10-hectare vineyard is only 3 kilometres from the sea. Compared to the
Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale, temperatures here are much cooler.
This absence of extreme high temperatures plays its part in preserving flavour
compounds in the fruit, as maximum colour development in the skins tends to occur
at temperatures around 25°C.
Cape d’Estaing only grows Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. No other fruit
is sourced in keeping with an estate philosophy.
